The Equality Act defines disability as any physical or mental impairment that has a “substantial and long-term adverse effect” on the ability to carry out normal daily activities.
According to the latest England and Wales census, as of March 2021, 20,767 people in Carlisle say they have such a disability. This is her 18.3% of the region’s population.
Of these people, 11,814 (10.4%) said their disability ‘a little’ interfered with their usual activities, and 8,953 (7.8%) said it ‘a lot’.
The overall proportion of people with disabilities has decreased since 2011, when 19.4% said they had a disability.
Commenting on the numbers, the disability equality charity Scope said it was “time” for society to make people with disabilities more inclusive.
Craig Moss, the charity’s research manager, said: No access to work, pubs or public transport. ”
“Life costs a lot more and people with disabilities have to fight to get the support they need,” he added.
The ONS cautioned that the wording of the questions varied from census to census, with 2021 using the 2010 Equality Act’s definition of disability for the first time and explicitly referring to mental disorders.
Jon Wroth-Smith, director of the 2021 Census, added that “the unique circumstances of the pandemic may have influenced the results.”
The percentages used by ONS have been standardized to account for age differences between regions.
According to the latest census data, a quarter of households in England and Wales have at least one person with a disability.
Carlisle had 13,460 households, including 3,096 households with two or more disabled persons.
The census also shows improvements in the health of people in both countries.
47.5% say their general health is ‘very good’ compared to 45% in 2011, and 1.2% from 1.4% say their overall health is ‘very bad’ Decreased.
As of March 2021, 46.7% of Carlisle residents say their health is ‘very good’, up from 44.9% in 2011.
On the other hand, the percentage of people who said their health was “very bad” decreased from 1.4% to 1.2%.
