Newswise — Washington, DC (January 10, 2023) — Uptal D. Patel, MD, was announced today as Chair of the Kidney Health Initiative (KHI). In addition to starting the year with a new chairman, seven new members will also join KHI’s board of directors.
KHI is a public-private partnership between the American Society of Nephrology (ASN), the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and multisectoral member organizations to advance the development of safe and effective treatments for patients with kidney disease. The Board oversees KHI’s strategy and represents a diversity of 90 organizations that are members of the largest biomedical consortium in the kidney community, including researchers, industry, government, kidney patients and medical professionals. Dr. Patel joined his KHI board of directors in 2018 and has had a career spanning academia and the private sector. Dr. Patel received medical residency at the University of California, San Francisco, followed by a clinical fellowship in pediatric and adult nephrology, and at the University of Michigan, where he underwent a medical services research residency through the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program. Prior to joining industry in 2016, he was Associate Professor of Life Medicine and Pediatrics at Duke University; I was the director of research. Institute. He is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine and is currently Head of the Clinical Nephrology Division and Executive Group for Early Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism at AstraZeneca where he is Director.
