In newly released data, ACS announced a significant decline in overall cancer mortality in the United States. The mortality rate he has decreased by 33% since 1999. In contrast, prostate cancer mortality trends continue to be alarming. Prostate cancer is already the second leading cause of cancer death in men in the United States. To make matters worse, black men have long been disproportionately hit by the disease. Mortality rates are approximately two to four times higher than for all other racial and ethnic groups.
Another troubling trend is the increasing diagnosis of advanced disease. Since 2011, advanced-stage prostate cancer diagnoses have increased by 4% to 5% each year, and the percentage of men diagnosed with late-stage prostate cancer has doubled.
“ACS is committed to leveraging a tripartite strategy to reverse the prostate cancer disparity and reduce prostate cancer mortality across all demographics and black male disparities by 2035. said Dr. Knudsen.
“Prostate cancer doesn’t necessarily have to be a death sentence if it’s caught early,” Carter said at Howard’s event. “We can and must do better through the right education, through the right commitment to talking about these things. We usually stop driving. Our bodies often give us red lights, but we ignore them.”
US Congressman Payne (D-NJ) has spoken out about the pain of losing a close relative to cancer. He pleaded with black men to get prostate cancer screening. and at no cost to the patient.
“Black men have a higher mortality rate because they are not screened regularly,” Payne said. “Regular screening allows us to catch cancer growth at an early stage when it can be effectively treated.”
Payne said, “My efforts are part of the fight against this terrible disease. We will raise awareness of the need for public education about cancer risks and stronger funding for the critical need for early screening.”
