Did you know that the first Chinese community in this part of the United States was in Belleville, not New York City? 68 Chinese men and boys arrived in Belleville. The first Lunar New Year was celebrated in Belleville in January 1871, and the first school, the Belleville Chinese Sabbath School for Chinese immigrants, opened later that year. In the 1870s and 1880s, Chinese immigrants from all over the region came to Belleville to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Chinese immigrants found a cozy home in Belleville at a time when intense discrimination was taking place elsewhere. The Belleville Historical Society is hosting the Belleville Chinese History/Lunar New Year exhibit through February 10 at his Belleville Public Library at 221 Washington Avenue.
