The Mobile Arm Rehabilitation Kit (MARK)– a powered arm and hand orthosis developed to help restore function to paralysed or deteriorated upper limbs– is now available for patients.
Normally, these individuals would be under the care of occupational therapists (OTs) to assist them gain back independence but the Shropshire professional orthopaedic has purchased a brand name brand-new, upper limb brace to transform rehab.
An NHS Trust has gotten to an innovative ₤ 50,000 tool to assist improve rehabilitation for clients with physical, sensory, or cognitive problems.

The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital is currently the only NHS Trust in the UK with access to this piece of devices. It comes following a ₤ 50,000 financial investment from the League of Friends.
One of the very first patients to utilize the orthosis as part of their rehab was 18-year-old Zac Fox who suffered an injury to the nerves in his ideal arm following a motorcycle accident back in 2019.
Zac had nerve surgical treatment at RJAH by Mr Pickard back in January 2020 and is now under of the care of the Occupational Therapy Team.
Simon included: “The brace supplies the opportunity to assist clients re-train muscles that they can not manage, or are recovering following injury or plastic surgery– this is the case for Zac, who otherwise wouldnt have the ability to perform everyday activities.

He said: “This is a really ingenious and progressive tool that will benefit a large cohort of our patients going forward– especially those with weakened muscles or paralysis that require extensive rehabilitation.”
Simon Pickard, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, who specialises in hand and upper limb surgical treatment– specifically upper limb paralysis from brain or spine injury in addition to peripheral nerve injuries– was the driving force behind the purchase of the MARK system.
