Cumberland County, North Carolina — Lawmakers arrested a teacher’s assistant at Cumberland County Schools Thursday morning on suspicion of assaulting a person with a disability.
Brittany Nicole McCoy has been charged with assaulting a disabled individual.
Authorities took McCoy to the Cumberland County Jail. She was released on her $5,000 bond.
The sheriff’s office said Cumberland County Schools was hiring at the time of McCoy’s arrest.
Cumberland County Schools Associate Superintendent Lindsey Whitley said in a statement, “These allegations do not reflect the professionalism and integrity of the many good people who work hard every day for our students. “Our number one priority will always be the safety and health of our students and staff.”
According to the district, McCoy resigned from her position as a special child assistance assistant on Dec. 13, 2022. The day before, the district issued her a paid suspension. Below is McCoy’s employment history at a Cumberland County school.
- September 2022 – December 2022: Outstanding Child Teacher Assistant at Pine Forest High School
- February 2022 – May 2022: Teacher Assistant and Bus Driver at Howard Hall Elementary School
- February 2020-December 2021: Teacher Assistant and Bus Driver at Howard Hall Elementary School
McCoy’s court date is set for February 2 at the Cumberland County Courthouse.
Whitley said school districts conduct extensive background checks before hiring employees. Whitley also said the district will continue to cooperate with the sheriff’s office in the investigation.
