Logan Burns is living the dream.
From the time Barnes was six or seven years old, he aspired to play college football.
“I remember watching college football on TV when I was a kid and thinking, ‘I want to be like them one day,'” said Curtis’ defensive tackle.
Just recently, his dream became a reality.
Players from the four-year varsity team signed a national letter of intent just before the holidays to attend Monmouth College on a full sports scholarship, according to Advance/SILive.com.
Barnes returned to Curtis as a senior after playing his sophomore and junior seasons at Jersey City’s St. Peter’s Prep.
“We’ve been in touch for quite some time, and about this time last year, they gave me an offer,” said Barnes, coach Peter Gambardella. “We visited several times last June and made verbal commitments before signing in December.
“It has been a dream of mine for a long time to play college football in Division 1, so it feels great,” he continued. “As far as I remember”
The 6-foot, 275-pound Burns could both be a run-stopper and a rushing passer throughout his high school career. He scored many bone-shaking hits with sacks and tackles in his senior year as the Warriors finished the 2022 season with a 7-6 record that included a trip to the PSAL A Division semifinals.
According to MaxPreps.com, he had 112 tackles (68 solo), 6 1/2 sacks, 2 cause fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries in 12 games for St. Peters in his junior year.
The Port Richmond resident said he is looking forward to playing under legendary coach Kevin Callahan, who started Monmouth’s football program 31 years ago. The Hawks began playing in the competitive Colonial Athletic Conference last fall.
“They think I can be a disruptor,” Burns said. “Monmouth is looking for a ready-to-play player and they think I can help them. They like almost everything. I believe you can help me.
“I am definitely blessed and very excited,” he continued.
Barnes, 18, plans to major in business administration. He also received offers from Stoney’s Brooke, Sacred Heart, UMass, Fordham, Duquesne, Lafayette, and interest from Wagner’s College.
