The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) issued an emergency shutdown order to Leith’s Community Care Homes No. 1 and No. 2 after DHEH staff inspected the facilities on December 8, 9, and 12. Did.
Residential care facilities, commonly known as assisted living facilities, were determined to pose an immediate threat to the health, safety and well-being of their residents.
According to the inspection report, the following list of violations was observed.
- Infestation of insects such as bedbugs and cockroaches
- Failure to properly administer resident medications
- Inadequate diet, unsanitary kitchen
Local and state authorities, including the SC Ombudsman’s Office, SC Department of Social Services, SC Department of Mental Health, and SC Department of Health and Social Services, supported relocation efforts. Her number one resident in Leith moved out on his Dec. 9, and her number two in Leith moved in on his Dec. 16, according to officials.
The residents’ families have been notified and local authorities continue to work with them.
