The Redwood Region Audubon Society will host its annual banquet and auction on February 18 at 5:30 PM at the D Block Center on 13th Street and D Street in Arcata.
Vitek Jirinec will give a talk titled “Climate change is changing the bodies of birds!” Zirlinek will discuss his research on Amazonian birds, including their rapidly evolving responses to climate change, and his other recent bird research and adventures.
“Most of the bird species we catch with mistnets are changing size and shape in response to climate change,” Zirlinek said. “Why should the general public care about this?” The individual lifestyle choices of people living far away, like us here in Humboldt County, affect oddities like the size and shape of a bird in the middle of Amazonia. If that doesn’t apply “global” to global climate change, I don’t know what the implications are. ”
Zirlinek moved to the United States from Prague, Czech Republic. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Wildlife from Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly His Humboldt School) in 2010, his Master of Science in Biology from the University of William and Mary in 2015, and his Louisiana I have a PhD in Renewable Natural Resources from State University. His research on rainforest bird responses to changing climate in the pristine Amazon rainforest has been widely covered in popular media such as NPR, National His Geographic, NBC, and the National Audubon Society.
