Eric Brown: Can our society allow proprietors and oligarchs to revoke people’s privileges?

Technological progress always excites me. They have helped my business progress and thrive after COVID threatened to shut down his commercial activities three years ago. Video conferencing, cloud data storage, and electronic billing have made my life more efficient and economical.

But as technology advances, there are also warnings about a dystopian future brought on by artificial intelligence and surveillance states. Every year we hear more and more about how technology is about to replace our jobs. We can also take advantage of technological advances to learn even more about us. Google probably knows you better than your parents or spouse.

I bought more Christmas gifts on Instagram this season because the platform always seemed to know what my interests were and what appealed to me. and scared. But I succumbed to convenience and probably suffered a permanent detriment.

The magazine Sports Illustrated was running a small segment called “Signs this week that the apocalypse is upon us.” I read about that signature in a national newspaper, not SI.

Have you been to Madison Square Garden? The first time I went was his 1975 when my dad and I took the train into the city to see Tony Hanson in Waterbury and his UConn Huskies in his NIT Frank he McGuire’s South Carolina Gamecocks I saw you play against Back then, NIT was an event. I remember that Princeton played Holy Cross in the second game of the doubleheader of the day and Providence was also in the tournament featuring Billy Eason, his freshman at Waterbury.

Anyway, since then I have loved the Garden and have many great memories of watching many great basketball players perform there.

But this week, Garden and its owner, James Dolan, used facial recognition technology to reveal that Dolan’s own perceived personal enemies could be seen at all of Garden’s properties, including Radio City Music Hall. I read a story about it preventing you from attending functions. The Rockets held their annual Christmas extravaganza.

And Mr. Doran has a long list of enemies. If he reads this column, maybe I’ll be on the list too. And I think that threat is exactly what he’s counting on to keep Gestapo tactics out of the negative press. For example, the mother of her 9-year-old, whose Girl Scout troop was attending a Christmas show at Radio City, was barred from entering the facility. one of its qualities.

It doesn’t matter, but it seems she wasn’t even the lawyer who filed the lawsuit.

The terrifying aspect of this is that suddenly authoritarian oligarchs are deciding who can and who can’t access public events and facilities on a personal whim. Are you a journalist who wrote a negative article on Twitter? Elon Musk has revoked your privileges.

Suddenly it’s not the government that is violating free speech. Those who have more power than the government. It’s the owner and the oligarch. And they are suppressing speech and diminishing rights. I hope we can reverse it in 2023, but I doubt it.
