The Fortune Society has released the following statement regarding a video released last night showing the Memphis police beating that led to Tyre Nichols’ death.
“It is impossible to witness Tyre Nichols’ fatal beating and feel horrified and saddened about the state of our nation. Joining all who mourn, his murder occurs amid too many examples of police brutality, too few examples of accountability, and a pattern of utter disregard for the sanctity of human life. .
Increasingly, Americans are deeply troubled by instances of police brutality against Black, Brown, and marginalized communities. mindset continues to destroy our country. At the Fortune Society, we hear stories every day from the people we serve who endure discrimination, stigma and violence, fostering a deep fear and distrust of law enforcement.
The rapid dismissal and prosecution of the officers involved, in contrast to the cover-ups and delays that are all too common in cases of police brutality, “…but the prompt and appropriate response is commendable.” As well, nothing can erase the horror of seeing Tyre Nichols beaten to death by the very police officers tasked with keeping the community safe.
