Detroit Lakes, Minnesota (KDLM) – Giving Hearts Day 2023 will be held on Thursday, February 9ththGiving Hearts Day is a 24-hour fundraising event. Since 2008, Giving Hearts Day has raised over $138 million for charities statewide.
One of the local nonprofits participating in this year’s Giving Hearts Day is the Humane Society of the Lakes. HS of the Lakes is a no-kill animal shelter in Becker County that serves unwanted, lost and abandoned animals while they wait for their eternal homes.
Tessa Fenu, the shelter’s fundraising coordinator, says Giving Hearts Day is an important day for the shelter.
“We are 100% donation-based,” says Fenu. “There is no city or state funding. So we rely 100% on in-kind donations, monetary donations and volunteers. And we need people to support us. It is very important that we continue to save the
Fenu adds that without the Humane Society, there would be more stray animals roaming the streets.
“Without us, our community would be overrun with stray cats and dogs, especially barn cats.”
In addition to monetary donations, HS of the Lakes is always soliciting volunteers and in-kind donations of dog and cat food, large dog toys, cat litter, office supplies, and more.
Other charities and nonprofits participating in this year’s Giving Hearts Day include: Boys and Girls Club of Detroit Lakes, Detroit Mountain, Essentia Health St. Mary’s Foundation, Friends of Tamarac, Health Resources, Holy Rosary School, Lend A Hand Up, Minnesota Flyers Gymnastics.
