CLEVELAND — Earlier this week, the Ohio Medical Board petitioned to add autism to the list of approved medical conditions that can be treated with medical cannabis in Ohio, according to the Ohio Medical Cannabis Industry Association.
demo. Rep. Juanita Brent has been working on House Bill 60 for years, but this will be her third time taking the bill to the floor.
First introduced in 2019, the HB 60 has slowly seen gaining traction in state legislatures over the years.
The bill was approved by the House in its last session, but stalled in the Senate, which also passed its own bill.
A new General Assembly has been called, so the bill must be reintroduced and voted on again in the House of Commons.
If approved, it will be submitted to the Senate.
Brent told News 5 that she sponsored the bill, which has bipartisan support, after hearing from parents desperately wanting another legal option to treat their children who have experienced autism. He said he decided to
“We’re taking too long and we’re losing families. Literally people I know emailing me saying they’re leaving Ohio and going to another state. Go to Michigan.” You can go to Pennsylvania, you can go to Illinois, you don’t have to go far,” Brent said.
OSMB stated the following as to why it was rejected so many times.
The committee has yet to consider substantial scientific evidence to support and justify treatment of autism with medical marijuana over conventional treatment.
