Hiring people with disabilities maintains diversity in the workplace and benefits from different people’s perspectives and backgrounds. But hiring diverse talent can be a challenge. Fortunately, employers can (and should) build their hiring processes with people with disabilities in mind. Today, the Markets Herald shares some ways employers can attract new employees of varying competencies.

    Maintain good employee relations

Maintaining good employee relations is important for employees of all abilities. Here are some characteristics that a good boss should have:

    • Provide clear and consistent feedback
    • Ask employees how they are doing both in their personal and professional lives on a regular basis
    • Assist workers with projects and priorities
    • Set clear and consistent expectations

These are just a few of the many guidelines managers can use to maintain good relationships with all employees. Current employees can be a good source of information when hiring new employees.

    Consider your hiring process

Recruiters should not only have web pages accessible to all, but also encourage individuals with disabilities to apply for jobs in other ways in the recruitment process. For example, an employer can produce a document outlining some of the reasons why the company is a good choice for people with disabilities. This may come in the form of a PDF document, and the author can use her PDF editor to easily modify the work if something is added or removed. Once the document is to their satisfaction, managers can download the portion and share it with potential employees.

    use an inclusive language

Various disabilities at work include heart disease, depression, hearing loss, traumatic brain injury, and various other conditions that affect mental and physical health. These conditions are so diverse that workplaces must be open to all obstacles. One way to foster inclusivity is to encourage the use of inclusive language. There are many ways to use an inclusive language, including:

    • Use people-first language, such as “people who use wheelchairs” instead of “wheelchair users”
    • Avoid using offensive and outdated terminology
    • Choose terms that include not only people of all abilities, but also race, ethnicity, and gender

Educating others about language can be a big step in the right direction to make employees with disabilities feel recognized and included in their peers.

    examine technology

Another way employers can help include people with disabilities, especially when hiring, is by ensuring that the technology they use works with people who see and hear differently. In addition to providing zoom-in functionality, webpages should include closed captions in the video on the page. Websites can also offer options to view the site with fewer distractions. This helps some people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

    think long term

Obviously, we also need to make sure our business is sustainable for the benefit of all our employees. That could mean doing more marketing via social media, but going back to school could also mean getting an edge over other business her leaders. If you don’t have a business degree yet, there are great options that will definitely give you the extra know-how you need to succeed. Best of all, the flexibility of the online program means you can learn at your own pace and act on the lessons you learn in real time.

    Conduct internship opportunities

Many people with disabilities are disadvantaged in the hiring process, so employers may find it advantageous to create internship opportunities for people with disabilities. This allows companies to attract talent from everyone, experts say.

When employers employ people with disabilities, they can benefit from new and different perspectives.
