License plate renewal costs for low-income seniors and people with disabilities are expected to be halved in the next year.
Low-income seniors and people with disabilities will see the cost of renewing their license plates drop by more than half over the next year.
A new law that goes into effect Sunday sets the cost of those eligible for the Illinois Access to Elderly Benefits Program from $24 to $10.
Eligible persons can also take advantage of free transit on Illinois’ fixed-route transit system.
To be eligible, a resident must be 65 years of age or older, or 16 years of age or older, have a disability, and meet income requirements. For single-person households, the annual income requirement is less than $33,562.
“In this period of high inflation, many seniors are finding it increasingly difficult to meet their daily expenses,” said Paula Busta, director of the Illinois Department of Aging. Discounts are welcome news for older drivers, helping them save money and keep their vehicle registration up to date.”
