14-year-old Alicia Navarro lived in Glendale, Arizona with her mother, stepfather, and two younger brothers and sisters. Alicia had high functioning autism and she was on medication every day. She struggled with her social interactions and was often overwhelmed. She said Alicia had trouble feeding herself or using public transportation. She liked to wear the same long-sleeve sweatshirt, she only ate familiar foods like McDonald’s, and she had just started high school when Alicia left the house in the middle of the night.
A few months before Alicia went missing, she was immersed in online games and a platform called Discord, where strangers can chat. Alicia in particular she enjoyed Minecraft and she was incredibly tech savvy. She had a laptop and a mobile phone. From around this time, changes began to appear in Alicia’s behavior, which had been accustomed to her routine. She suddenly became interested in make-up, provocative outfits and her protein powder.
At 1am on September 15, 2019, Alicia went downstairs and ran into her mother, Jessica, who was waiting for her husband to come home from work. Alicia got a glass of water and asked her mom when she was going to bed. She told her mother that she loved her and went back to her bedroom.
At 7am, Jessica woke up and started making breakfast for Alicia’s brother who was awake. She thought Alicia was still in bed when she realized the door to the backyard was open. When Jessica went outside, she saw two lawn chairs pushed against a brick wall. When she ran to Alicia’s bedroom, she panicked and found it empty, she wrote on a note on her dresser that read: “I ran away. I’ll be back, I swear. I’m sorry – Alicia.” Jessica and her husband soon reported their daughter missing.

Alicia brought her backpack, computer, cell phone, body sprays, cosmetics and comic books, but no chargers for her electronics. This indicates that Alicia was planning to return to her home as written in the note. Unfortunately, Alicia did not return, and her investigation found that she may have been groomed by someone she met on her platform online.
A few months before Alicia ran away from home, she told a friend that she had a boyfriend and might run away to California. This was around the time her behavior and her interests began to change.
Some witnesses reported seeing Alicia at La Pradera Park on September 20, her fifteenth birthday. Alicia was reportedly with an unknown African-American man with tattoos on his face and neck. was really looking forward to his birthday and ordered a steak and red velvet cake. The fact that she did not return to her home on her birthday convinced them that she had been trafficked.
