Lynchburg, Virginia (WFXR) — A recent influx of animals has caused the Lynchburg Humane Society to reach a record number of dogs on its premises. In total, they now have over 350 animals, and he says none are empty.
They held an adoption special this weekend, charging just $17 to adopt a new pet.
The Lynchburg Humane Society says it has welcomed more than 50 pets at its already full facility since Christmas Day. Her director of operations, Amber Cabell, said she will extend the special if interest continues.
“If we need to get more dogs out of the building and people still come and want to adopt, we’re happy to extend it,” Cavell said.
Cavell said humane societies want the adoption and transition process to be as smooth as possible for both owners and pets.
“Sterilization and neutering are free. Again, microchipped and up-to-date vaccines available. We also support the initial process of bringing home. We are always here to answer questions and provide feedback,” said Cabell.
Due to the sheer number of animals, the shelter’s daily operations can be difficult, Cavell said.
“We’ve clearly outpaced our staff-to-pet ratio, so the more dogs we have, the more stressful they’re going to be, because we’re only keeping up with providing their care,” says Cavell. I got
Mikela Puscas has been volunteering with the Lynchburg Humane Society for several months and says she is always looking for additional help.
“Individual pets try to do the best they can for themselves, but only one can do it in a given amount of time,” says Puscas.
Without this facility, Puscas said these animals would likely have no food or shelter in the cold.
“I think animals are like family. I know you want your kids to have clean clothes, so I think animals need clean things,” says Puscas.
If you can’t adopt, Cabell says there are other ways to help.
“If you can bring it home for the weekend, but you can’t keep it long term, fostering can definitely help,” she said.
She said they’re always looking for more volunteers, are accepting donations, and currently have several paid positions open if you’d like to get involved.
