Under the Influence: Fashion Society is an organization focused on showcasing the artistic talents of UT Martin students through fashion. Founded in August 2021 by the president’s girlfriend Shan’Tia Crawford. Their High Council welcomes and encourages participation from individuals who demonstrate an interest or ability in modeling, hairdressing, designing, sewing, or creating. It also helps promote small businesses by bringing entrepreneurs such as homeowners, artists, etc. to large events. It’s the perfect environment for like-minded people to network, exchange resources, and grow business. Everyone involved has a purpose and plays an important role regardless of their position.
The organization not only hosts events such as lavish fashion shows, but also emphasizes the importance of community service. On Sundays, UTI:FS takes time out to serve local youth at the Martin Enrichment Academy, also known as the Teen Center. I donate clothing to Weakley County whenever I get the chance. With their positive morals and hard work, they will raise awareness of the services they offer in the city of Martin.
This semester the group will do even more community service and host many events. . Additionally, the organization looks forward to highlighting women through activities, fundraising and club collaborations during Women’s History Month in March. Another exciting thing to expect is Black Fashion Week. As a predominantly black organization, UTI:FS members share and celebrate the long history of black fashion. Much of their content is posted on their Instagram account and they hope to grow their following significantly as the organization prides itself on influencing and inspiring others. Members also share their talents and participate in creative workshops. Most importantly, the recruitment of models for the spring fashion show is scheduled to take place on March 1, 2023.
