(NewsNation) — Tens of thousands of mothers are suing Tylenol makers in a class action lawsuit, claiming that Tylenol use during pregnancy led to the birth of an autistic child.
An NIH study found that exposure to acetaminophen, the main ingredient in Tylenol, during pregnancy may increase the risk of autism and ADHD in children.
Karleen DeGroodt is one of the mothers participating in the lawsuit, and during an appearance on NewsNation’s “Prime,” she spoke about her Tylenol use during pregnancy and her son’s autism.
DeGroodt first noticed it when his son, Devin, was an infant.
“He never really made good eye contact,” she said. There were developmental milestones that weren’t achieved. He was definitely trapped in his own bubble.”
DeGroodt said genetic testing showed no family history or cause for his son’s condition.
“We’ve put together a great team that’s trying to understand not just why, but what we can do to help him,” she said. I’m back.”
Looking at recent research, DeGroodt said Tylenol use may be linked to his son’s autism.
“At the moment, it’s the only possible explanation for his autism.
A growing number of studies have reportedly suggested that heavy use of acetaminophen during pregnancy may cause autism and ADHD.
One of the biggest supporters of the movement is consumer advocate Erin Brockovich, who recently appeared on NewsNation to discuss the issue.
“My job and my job with these women is to make their voices and concerns about their children heard when science develops, and it feels like it’s being repressed or covered up again. increase.
DeGroodt said the lawsuit will “educate people and help them make choices that are best for themselves.”
As a parent of a child with autism, DeGroodt said he experienced a range of emotions. There is guilt.”
“I felt guilty years ago before thinking that Tylenol or acetaminophen products could be a potential reason,” she said. I wish I knew…. maybe I would have done differently.
DeGroodt said their fight was very important to many other families.
“At the end of the day, this is potentially all that’s holding back this,” she said. To go.”
