KUALA LUMPUR, January 8 — Amendments to the Persons with Disabilities (PwD) Act 2008 will be finalized by June this year, with a focus on empowerment and enforcement to protect the rights of groups.
Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the current law needs to be amended because many feel it is weak or inflexible.
She said, for example, that shopping complexes have special parking spaces for disabled people, but no proper enforcement is in place to ensure that the spaces are not used by other people (both able-bodied). said.
“The ministry is debating that the amendment should include enforcement aspects. We need stronger legislation,” she told reporters today after waving a flag.

Meanwhile, Nancy said in her speech that the ministry would like to increase the handicapped registry in order to better plan impactful programs and initiatives.
She said there were 633,653 registered PwDs nationwide by December last year.
Nancy also called on all attendees at today’s event to support her ministry in raising awareness and encouraging all people with disabilities to register.
