JACKSONVILLE, FL — As the saying goes, “A picture is worth 1,000 words.” For Carli Sperry, stickers are much more valuable because she can’t speak many words.
Carli is in sixth grade and loves cheerleading and the outdoors. She’s like most of her 11 year old girls. But one of her differences that you may not notice is that she is non-verbal autistic.
That’s why the sticker on Carly’s mom’s car is so important and gives Sherry a sense of security.
“Yes, she looks healthy, but she doesn’t really understand social cues and personal space,” said Shelley Sperry. It will be better.”
Stickers are distributed free of charge by the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office. It’s in the back of the car and by the front door of the house to alert agents that someone with autism is inside.
“We want our agents to be prepared and conscious so they feel comfortable and safe,” said Sheriff Bill Leeper.
Once the parent receives the decal, they will fill out the address on the form so that the dispatcher will have that information when the representative arrives at the house to ask for help.
The sheriff’s office is also offering free scent kits to help bloodhounds locate missing autistic people.
