Washington, January 5, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The National Coalition for Access to Autism Services (NCAAS) today praised the newly enacted Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 for its focus on expanding mental health parity . A proven treatment for people with autism and their families.

“We are thrilled that Congress has included a clause defended by the NCAAS in its recent omnibus package,” he said. Julie Cornac, a founding member of the NCAAS. “This demonstrates our legislators’ continued commitment to achieving true mental health parity that makes ABA more accessible, especially for people and families who have historically been marginalized or have limited means. I have.”

“The NCAAS has spent several years educating lawmakers about health insurance’s systematic denial of ABA coverage based on practices and guidelines that violate the Mental Health Parity Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA). We’ve been working on it, and I’m happy that our efforts have paid off,” Kornak said.

An omnibus package to fund federal funding through fiscal 2023 includes language endorsed by the NCAAS and requires the Departments of Health and Human Services, Labor and Treasury to assess whether medical plans are complying. to increase the impact of work that began two years ago. Federal Mental Health Equality Act.

a report announced by the three institutions. January 2022 found that health plans frequently impose inappropriate non-quantitative treatment limits on ABA. When officials asked the health plan for a comparative analysis to show that these restrictions did not violate the Equal Mental Health Act, the plan either removed the problematic provisions or made them accurate or timely. No analysis could be submitted. As a result, no final determination on the legality of the clause was made. This limited the impact of agency efforts on individual plans in question.

“Non-quantitative treatment restrictions create an unfair barrier for people who already have trouble accessing mental health services like ABA,” said Kornack. “The language we intended to include in our omnibus package would provide clarity to health planners, providers, and patients alike by publicly identifying policy limitations that violate the MHPAEA and ensure that all health It has the potential to give insurance an opportunity to remove similar discriminatory restrictions.”
