Cimarron, New Mexico (KRQE) – Basketball coaches are living legends. The Cimarron High School head coach is currently 44 in his second season.
Coach Eloy Brazil said his coaching career has been impressive.
“It’s been a big part of my life, which means I keep doing it because I feel it’s probably the best thing I do,” said the Brazilian coach.
Eloy Brazilian family moved to Cimarron when he was a baby. The 68-year-old started coaching when he was 22.
The Brazilian coach said basketball has always been part of his life. While attending his college in Santa Fe, he began thinking about coaching and studied it as a minor.
“I have always studied the game, learned and strived to become a better coach myself,” explained the Brazilian coach.
After graduating, he served as the head coach of Cimarron High School for 14 years. He won his first state championship title in 1979.
The Brazil coach then coached the Springer Red Devils, who won the state championship in 2002 and 2004. Brazil His coaching streak continued after coaching at Maxwell High School, leading the team to a championship in 2017.
He is known for his characteristic gestures during games.
“Kids would always raise their hands like that and say, ‘What are you doing? That was my pose,'” said the Brazilian coach.
He is now back coaching the Cimarron Rams. Over his entire coaching career, Brazil has won a total of 656 wins. And if he wins five times, he’ll set a new record by beating Albuquerque High School legend Jim Halsman.
The Brazilian coach said that while winning was fun, the real reward was working with so many students.
“Seeing the children I coach succeed is probably one of the things I enjoy most about their daily lives,” said the Brazilian coach.
The Brazilian coach is just one of two coaches who have won at three different schools.
