AIFA’s Leading Society recently hosted a Spreading Cheer initiative. An annual event to promote equitable and inclusive learning among persons with disabilities, the event is used to commemorate International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
For this year’s event, the association organized a variety of activities including an AIFA Book Club, interactive sessions with teachers, book donations, and arts and crafts sessions at the Hope Fountain School for the Deaf in Ifaco Ijaye, Lagos. .
Designed to assess students’ knowledge and comprehension, improve their communication skills and stimulate their interest in reading, the Book Club Sessions were facilitated by AIFA Program Officer Ms. Magdalene Oyolo.
This session focused on the short story “Who Did Patrick’s Homework?” from Advance-Africa. I enabled my students to share their thoughts and highlight lessons from the stories. A total of 55 students attended the book club session and expressed interest in participating in the subsequent social reading session.
Another highlight of this year’s celebration was an interactive session on “Emotional Intelligence for Effective Classroom Management” held for teachers. The session will be moderated by her Mrs. Nene Dimowo, Director of Irisfield Schools and an Autism Specialist, to engage teachers in managing students and classrooms to achieve quality learning, and special needs It further encouraged the importance of teachers as educators.
AIFA Reading Society Program Coordinator, Ijeoma Ezenwere, and Early Childhood Educator and AIFA Volunteer, Kafayat Lawal, guided primary school students in a handicraft session.
This was intended to stimulate students’ interest in other forms of learning, thereby promoting their cognitive, physical and social development.
Of the 50 participants, 6 were awarded for their excellent works. Teachers pledged to capitalize on their students’ skills in response to their excellent grades.
The association distributed 200 learning materials presented by Ms. Hummirayo Adesina, the association’s Practice Supervision Manager, to the school, who said that with the support of its members and friends, it hoped the school would make the most of the books. donated to Mrs. Chukwuemeka, Deputy Head Teacher, thanked the association for promoting quality education and for its contribution to improving the educational development of the students of Hope Fountain Deaf School.
The Spreading Cheer initiative has reached over 5,122 children with special needs in Nigeria since 2015 to date. Through its initiatives, the AIFA Reading Society is committed to fostering a reading culture and promoting quality education for sustainable development. The Association looks forward to promoting inclusive learning among all members of the Association regardless of age, gender, status or background.
