This week’s show featured Michelle Meetze James. She has an obsession with all plants. Michelle has a large rose garden, mostly tea roses. She has a big hydroponic tomato her setup that she built from scratch. She also grows other herbs and vegetables, starting from seed. She is a member of the Tampa Bay Begonia Society and the Tampa Orchid Club, and a member of the International Rare Fruit Council. Michelle is also Vice President of the Davis Islands Garden Club. She is the author and photographer for the She yard of the month article for Davis Islands Stroll Magazine. In her spare time, she launched her Facebook gardening group with her beloved John Stearns. She regularly teaches children’s gardening classes, and last year Rose took part in a circle garden tour. (And a big hit!)
As a child, Michelle was inspired by her grandpa, who lives here in South Tampa. Her grandfather was a barber in her Mabley, Southdale. Her grandparents’ backyard was the literal definition of a Victory Garden. Spending time there as a child was like being in a farmer’s market wonderland. Her grandpa also won an award for excellence at the Florida State Fair for a giant jade plant about six feet in diameter.
Talking about roses… Learned from Hardin’s Roses, but moved to organic under the influence of John Starnes and David Whitwam. Roses are planted wherever the sun is available. Monocultures of plants cause pest problems, so many native plants, herbs, watermelons and pumpkins are planted with roses to diversify.
She has a huge cut flower garden of her own and a hydroponic system (Dutch bucket).
Demonstrate what you can do for yourself and how you can help others by gardening and loving nature. And there are many directions to go…. All of this will make you more sustainable and show you how others can be more sustainable too.
