Formatges Mutanyola, a small Catalan company with a humanitarian cause, won gold at the 2022 World Cheese Awards for its half-aged goat cheese and bronze for its beer-washed eco-friendly cow’s milk cheese. . But the greatest reward for the company has been its success in integrating people with disabilities into the art of making cheese.
The World Cheese Awards event is an annual competition held in the UK by the British gastronomic association, the Guilds of Fine Foods. The event awards the best cheeses from around the world and the 2022 winner was announced on his November 3rd. Over 4,000 cheeses from 42 countries competed in front of a panel of 250 experts from 38 countries during his two days in Newport. Wales.
This is a very serious event and it explains the pride of the entire team at Formatges Mutannyola on the outskirts of Barcelona. They are happy that their work sets an example for others who want to provide employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
Anna Prado, manager of Formatges Mutannyola, explains the importance of this achievement:
“They recognized the effort, dedication and hard work of the entire team in this humanitarian project that began almost a decade ago.”
The cheese factory belongs to the Ampans Foundation, a charity that has cared for people with intellectual disabilities and accompanied vulnerable people in insecure situations through various projects, including this one, since 1965. I’m here.
These two medals reward not only employee integration, but also their work. Regarding the Gold Award, the experts of the International Jury emphasized that Garrocha cheese is the best in the world in its category. The mouthfeel is creamy and the mouthfeel is soft and pleasant. The bronze medal went to Lúpulus, an eco-friendly cow’s milk cheese. This cheese is aged for 6 months and the rind is washed with beer.
And while the title of ‘world’s best cheese’ is awarded to the Swiss Gruyère, the French can take a little comfort in themselves: out of the top 16, three cheeses come from France!
